Comcare Fatalities rate climbs

Comcare's fatality rate is up on last year's but its injury rate remains the same.

Compensable fatalities reached 3.2 per 100,000 full-time employees (FTE) in 2009-2010, compared with 1.1 fatalities per 100,000 in the previous year, Comcare's 2009-2010 annual report stated.

Comcare had failed to reach its target of zero deaths and was pessimistic about reaching this target in the future. "It is likely that this target will remain difficult to achieve in the future as the number of deaths can fluctuate from year to year, often irrespective of any prevention activities," Comcare's annual report said. "However, workplace deaths are unacceptable and Comcare therefore continues to strive for a target of zero each year."

Compensable injuries involving one week off work per 1,000 FTE remained at 8.8: unchanged since last year. Despite a lack of improvement in the injury rate, Comcare said that the figures reflected a 27 per cent reduction on the 2001-02 injury rate. To reach the 2009-2010 target of 8.2 injuries per 1,000 FTE, however, a 32 per cent reduction on the 2001-02 figures would have been required.
