Flood rethink at work
Employers must revisit risk management in the wake of the recent floods in Queensland and other parts of Australia.
Floodwaters inundated a number of Queensland towns and cities and other parts of Australia, in December and January, killing and injuring people, and damaging and destroying property.
"Floods present hazards and risks at work not contemplated in times of normal operation," said a recent report from the law firm Blake Dawson.
"Employers need to analyse the exposure to hazards and health and safety risks of persons at the workplace where workers continue to work during the flood period; before a return to the workplace; and on an ongoing basis after return to work."
The Blake Dawson report said employers should take a number of steps – such as identifying and controlling risks – in consultation with their workforces to manage risks.
Among the risks that may be present after a flood are equipment or fittings that have moved, unstable buildings, damaged electrical and gas systems, contaminated floodwater and psychological risks.
