Public comment period opened for national OHS laws
Safe Work Australia Council Chair, Tom Phillips, has opened the public comment period on the new model occupational health and safety (OHS) legislation.
Safe Work Australia, in partnership with the Commonwealth, state and territory governments, has been developing the national OHS laws.
On 25 September 2009, the Workplace Relations Ministers’ Council agreed to release the endorsed exposure draft and supporting documentation for public comment.
The public consultation process will help ensure the new national OHS laws are relevant and applicable to all Australian workplaces, according to Safe Work Australia.
The process is expected to solicit feedback from businesses, unions and workers, informing the development of the laws.
The unions, which have been vocal in their calls for modifications to the laws, are expected to have substantial contributions to the process.
According to Safe Work Australia, the harmonisation of OHS laws will allow businesses to effectively manage workplace safety and work to one set of laws regardless of which jurisdiction they are operating in.
The public may comment on a number of documents, including the model ACT, administrative Regulations and consultation Regulation Impact Statement (RIS).
The public comment period will be open for six weeks and will close on 9 November 2009.
